Adjectives Rule PDF Summary

Adjectives are usually placed before the noun they modify, such as “a blue car,” “a tall building,” or “an interesting book.”

When several adjectives are used to describe a noun, they normally go in this sequence. The following are the general rankings: opinion, size, age, form, color, origin, material, and purpose. “A beautiful, small, antique, round, green, Italian, wooden serving tray,” for example.

Adjectives have comparative and superlative forms to describe degrees of comparison. When comparing two items, the comparative form is used, and when comparing three or more things, the superlative form is used. For instance, “taller” and “tallest” are comparative and superlative versions of the adjective “tall.”

Adjectives must agree in number and gender with the nouns they modify. For example, “happy” agrees with the single, masculine noun “boy” in the phrase “the happy boy,” but “happy” would change to “happy girls” to agree with the plural, feminine noun “girls.”

Adjectives can also be employed as predicate adjectives, which follow after connecting verbs such as “be,” “seem,” and “become.” “The soup is hot,” for example, where “hot” is a predicate adjective.
